Public Profile: At present, I am undertaking a PGCE in English at Bath Spa University. My motivation, strong organisational skills and energy, and my ability to remain calm and cheerful even under pressure made for a very positive first placement at a comprehensive school in Andover, where I was involved in teaching a range of ages and abilities. I developed medium term plans differentiating for each of my classes and focussing my planning to produce engaging and innovative lessons, facilitating my building of positive relationships with students.

Although the main body of my teaching has been within the English department, I have also taught Key Stage 4 Film and Media studies, focussing on an introduction to media terminology, camera shots, photography and storyboarding. I enjoyed this variation in subject and found that there were a number of transferable skills in Media that can be adapted to analysing texts in English.

I feel that all pupils should be encouraged to develop their English skills through relevant and stimulating lessons. Whilst teaching English I try to capture the pupils’ imaginations and encourage them to have a voice, through the use of relevant media material, ICT and visual stimuli. I see motivating and enthusing pupils to reach their full potential within the subject as the reward of teaching.

During my school placement, I was attached to a Year 7 tutor group, a number of which attended the Primary curriculum centre. I thoroughly enjoyed the pastoral aspect of teaching, recognising the importance of this role for each pupil and the school. It is important to build up a strong relationship with your tutor group, so that they know they have someone to talk to if needed. I believe this is particularly important in Year 7, as the change from Primary to Secondary education can be quite daunting for some. I believe that a school's pastoral care system should benefit the wider educational development of pupils.

I feel that I have much to offer your school and the wider community and seek opportunities to enhance students’ learning through getting involved with extra-curricular activities, as I regard these as a fundamental building block of pupils’ individual development. During my first placement I helped to run the after school leadership academy, which encouraged young people to take control in sport. We looked at how to set up and run wheel chair basketball, snake boarding and dodge-ball games. It was great to see how enthusiastic the pupils were to learn new skills and take charge of the activities, which in turn helped to boost their confidence.

During my first placement, I was involved with the stage production of the Andover Community Theatre’s production of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Students were encouraged to attend the performance as an aid to their study of the text in year 9 and 11; the fact that a number of their English teachers were starring in the production added to the attraction. I would like to use my experience of Performing Arts to set up or to aid an after school club, and will be more than willing to help out with school productions.

Prior to my PGCE, I spent five years working for a large multi-national consultancy, managing a range of projects and people. Through this I developed strong communication and interpersonal skills that enhanced my innate ability to get the best from people, something that I was widely recognised for. I feel this competence can be transferred to a classroom environment, and more widely with parents and colleagues.

I have a keen interest in other countries and cultures and spent time travelling in India after completing my undergraduate degree. This experience opened my eyes to the importance of understanding and appreciating other cultures. I feel that this experience will enable me to promote an interest in the wider world and I would relish the opportunity to assist in any excursions. I look forward to using my skills in extra-curricular activities in order to contribute to the wider life of the school.

I believe a career in teaching, although demanding work, will be extremely rewarding as it will allow me to continue expanding my knowledge alongside the students. As a teacher you are constantly developing and reflecting upon your practise in order to aid the students. Young people have so much energy and enthusiasm; a real passion for life. If this can be focused in the right direction then I believe great things can happen.
